How delays are calculated

Data

Live train positions
Seoul Open Data Plaza. Every few tens of seconds we learn which station each train is approaching, at, or leaving.
Station timetables
Seoul Open Data Plaza. Weekday, Saturday and Sunday (holiday) timetables, refreshed daily.
Public holidays
the Korean public data portal's holiday calendar. On holidays the Sunday timetable applies.

Delay

We compare the time a train arrived at a station with that train's scheduled arrival time. Later is a delay, earlier is early running. In the daily report, "on time" is the share of arrivals within 1 minute (or 5 minutes) of the timetable.

The "Estimated" label

Sometimes a train number in the live data does not match the timetable. In that case we match the train to the nearest scheduled train at that station and direction, and label the result "Estimated".

Known limits

  • Live data can reach us anywhere from tens of seconds to a few minutes after the fact.
  • The source's "arrived" signal fires about 25 seconds before the doors open, so recorded arrival times are slightly early.
  • On some lines the train numbering differs from the timetable, so a larger share of values are estimated.
  • Periods when collection stopped are left out of the reports.
